Car Tune-Ups - Mobile Mechanic Pros of Kansas City

Keeping your car in top shape is essential for protecting your investment and ensuring it runs at peak performance and fuel efficiency. Regular tune-ups are a key part of this maintenance, helping to prevent more costly repairs down the line. During a tune-up, we check and replace various components, followed by diagnostic tests to identify any adjustments needed to restore your engine’s optimal performance. While you can schedule a tune-up at any time, it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. Remember, our mobile mechanics love fixing cars, but staying on top of your tune-ups means fewer costly repairs in the future!

What We Check During a Tune-Up

    Ignition System

The ignition system is one of the most critical areas of your car’s engine, and problems here can lead to significant issues. While many modern vehicles have computerized components, some ignition parts may still need attention during a tune-up.

Spark Plugs: These little heroes ignite the fuel in your engine. Over time, the metal tip can wear down from heat and pressure, leading to a larger gap that can cause misfires—when fuel isn’t ignited in the cylinder. When replacing spark plugs, we recommend using original equipment parts as specified by your manufacturer.

Ignition Wires: Over time, these wires can wear out, leading to poor connections with either the spark plug or ignition coil. If a cylinder isn’t firing, it can cause rough engine performance. We recommend replacing ignition wires in sets to ensure consistent performance.

Distributor Cap & Rotor (if applicable): Inside the distributor cap, a rotating arm makes contact with metal points, allowing the spark to travel to the spark plugs. If these contacts wear down, you may experience random or no firing at all. We suggest replacing both the cap and rotor during a tune-up for optimal performance.

    Filters

Your car has several filters to keep contaminants out of the engine and ensure clean airflow.

Air Filters: As your engine runs, air is drawn in, and over time, the air filter can become clogged with dust and debris. A dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 14% in carbureted engines and impact performance in fuel-injected engines as well.

Oil Filter: A clean oil filter is crucial for filtering out particles that can cause wear on your engine’s internal components. Clogged oil filters can lead to excessive wear and even high oil pressure. We recommend changing the oil filter with every oil change.

PCV Valve: The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve can get clogged with carbon deposits over time, leading to excessive oil consumption and an imbalanced air-to-fuel ratio.

    Belts

Your engine has several belts that serve different functions. Over time, they can stretch or become damaged. During a full engine tune-up, we inspect these belts for wear and tear, especially given the varying weather conditions in Kansas City.

    Fluids

We check all engine fluid levels during a tune-up, topping up or changing fluids as necessary. Many fluids need to be replaced when specific components are serviced.

    Battery

Lastly, let’s talk about batteries. Due to the extreme temperatures we experience, batteries can have a shorter lifespan. We recommend investing in a battery with a 3 to 5-year warranty, so when it does eventually fail (and it will), you can easily swap it out for a new one.
